The challenge
Distributing time between work, family, social commitments, and self-care can be a challenge for any learning process. However, commitment, motivation, and timely support are great allies to overcome these barriers and achieve objectives.
This is the case of Alimentos Cárnicos, a Grupo Nutresa company dedicated to the production and marketing of meat, with a direct presence in four countries. They were looking for a solution that would allow their workforce to learn the English their roles demanded, but with a model that was adaptable to their routines and responsibilities
The solution
When reviewing different alternatives, they chose Slang because of our flexible and customized programs that could be adjusted to each person’s needs. Today, they have been using our platform for two years based on an English scholarship model that has impacted more than 300 employees and family members.
The internal support of the Human Resources department, in addition to follow-ups by our Customer Success team and the dedication of several collaborators, has made this implementation a complete success. A great example of this is Alirio Santos, a logistics assistant at Alimentos Cárnicos, who started his process with Slang on February 9, 2021 and, thanks to his discipline, became one of the first users to complete all of the General and Professional English courses.
Step one: setting goals
Alirio started with a beginner level of English: he obtained a 17% on our General English test. Based on this result, the next step was to establish the goals that would allow him to move forward. The Human Resources department and our Customer Success team defined a study schedule for him based on his availability.
In his first two months, Alirio did not exceed ten hours of study, which is normal, as familiarizing yourself with the platform and understanding the time commitment can take a few weeks. However, he states that “as time went by, I started to discover and become interested in each of the different topics that the platform offered me and, to be honest, I found the activities, topics, and variety of courses offered to be extremely interesting and entertaining”.
Until that moment, he had not recognized the importance of English in his role, but, over the course of his learning path, he became aware of the possibilities that this language offers for his professional development. So his determination became unstoppable and his desire to continue improving made him more and more focused on his learning process.
Following up: the key to successful learning
Once the adaptation stage was over, we updated Alirio’s goals to take his English to another level: a more professional and advanced one. To work toward this objective, he set a goal of spending at least fifteen minutes a day studying on the platform.
“I decided to stop watching TV and other unproductive activities in favor of practicing intensively,” he said. “As a result, I started to see important progress in pronunciation and writing.” The results were surprising: in his third month, he studied for more than 29 hours, and he reached a peak of 50 hours in August.
Course catalog and follow-up tests
The first course Alirio completed was Logistics, followed by Manufacturing and Occupational Health and Safety, all directly related to his professional position. Later, he began to explore other courses and he always finished the courses that he started, with the aim of correctly learning all the necessary terms before moving on to the next one.
With the follow-up tests that we conduct every six months, he continued to demonstrate incredible progress: from the 17% obtained in the initial diagnosis, Alirio improved to 64% in his first progress evaluation and reached the Elementary level after a year of studying with Slang.
Undoubtedly, his learning process has been an example to many others, because today he sees how each achieved goal impacts his work and personal life. “I can see that I have had important achievements […] Studying was intense every day, but, above all, it was really enriching and, thanks to that, I was able to finish all the courses on the platform,” he concludes.
